No. 13 Shasta eliminated by No. 4 Sacramento City in playoffs
Knights give up 19 runs in two games
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The 13th-seeded Shasta College softball team lose both games in a best-of-three series to No. 4 Sacramento City College 7-4 and 12-1 over the weekend to be eliminated in the first round of the California Community College Athletic Association Northern California Regional playoffs.
The Knights, who captured a second Golden Valley Conference title in three years, finish the season 23-13 overall.
Shasta led Sac City 4-0 in midway through the fifth inning until Sac City exploded for all seven of its runs in the bottom half of the frame with a three-run homer from Jordyn Farren resulting in the go-ahead run.
Carli Lewis took the loss in the circle, striking out three, walking one and allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in the complete game. Shasta spread its runs out with Reese Bertain singling in Lindsey Beck in the second, Tara George scoring on a passed ball and Erica Parent's RBI single scored Marissa Hopkins in the fourth, and Destinee Baird came around to score on a double from Hopkins. The Knights left 10 runners on base. George was 2 for 4 with a run, Hopkins was 2 for 3 and Baird was 1 for 2 with a double and a run.
On Saturday, Sacramento jumped ahead 3-0 after the first two innings and Shasta couldn't keep up the rest of the way. Reilly Rupert took the loss, striking out four and walking four, and giving up 12 runs – eight earned – on 12 hits in a complete game.
The Knights had four hits from four different players. Beck was 1 for 2 with a double as the lone extra base hit of the game for Shasta. George was 1 for 3 with an RBI and Parent was 1 for 3 with a run.
